Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)
A WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) is a documented, qualified welding procedure designed to offer guidance for producing welds that meet code requirements in production settings. The pivotal document, the Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), outlines welding variables necessary to ensure welded joints achieve specified levels of quality and mechanical properties. Its purpose is to direct welders to approved procedures, ensuring consistent and reliable welding techniques. A WPS is crafted for each material alloy and welding type employed. Often, specific codes or engineering societies drive the development of a company’s WPS. Furthermore, a WPS is complemented by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR or WPQR)
Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)
A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) serves as a comprehensive record of the welding data utilized to weld a test coupon. It becomes necessary to obtain a PQR when demonstrating the capability of your company to produce welds possessing the correct mechanical and metallurgical properties. Welding procedures must undergo qualification in accordance with relevant welding procedure standards, such as ASME Sec IX or AWS D1.1. The process typically involves:
- Specializing in mechanical drafting services.
- Crafting a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) as previously described.
- Welding a test piece as per your specification guidelines. This entails setting up the joint, conducting the welding process, and visually inspecting the completed weld, all under the observation of a certified welding inspector, such as an AWS-certified CWI or an Inspection Body. Crucial details of the test, including welding current and pre-heat conditions, must be meticulously recorded.
- Upon successful completion of the test, Kaspa NDT and Engineering Services finalizes the necessary documentation, which is then signed and endorsed by the test body’s surveyor.
